The Town of St. George's
Finding what you need during your stay could not be easier. Follow the Driveway up to the red pillars and turn right walking along the railway trail until in meets the main road into St. George’s. In less than ten minutes you will be in the midst of the Old Colonial town. If you keep on the same road, passing the King’s Square on your right, continue a few paces and you will find Somers Supermarket on your left for all your grocery needs. For a small fee they will deliver groceries by van if arranged by phone. If you forget a staple, pop up to the top of Speakers drive turn left, and walk west and you will find Cousin’s variety store for a carton of milk, chocolate and even wine in the back room.
In the main town just before you reach the King’s Square you will pass Robertson’s which houses a pharmacy, card shop, gifts, and a doctor’s office. Across from Robertson’s is the Post Office where you can purchase bus tickets. Diagonal from Robertsons is the Visitor Center where you can get detailed information and ideas for your trip to Bermuda. Outside of the Post Office and parallel to the main road, which leads into St, George’s is Water Street, where you will find restaurants and shops. Stop in the English Sports Shop to get a pair of Bermuda Shorts, or go into Wahoo’s to try the famous Wahoo burger or popular wahoo tacos. If sushi is your thing you will enjoy the Wharf Tavern’s dedicated sushi bar which opened in 2020. You will find two Bank’s and ATMs on the King’s Square, and more restaurants. Alcohol can be purchased at Somers Supermarket or the two liquor stores that are also in town. You may also rent a moped or Twizzy (small two person car) in St. George’s for adventuring around Bermuda with independence or take taxis from the square, a train, or horse and carriage ride, a bus into Hamilton or a ferry to Dockyard.
Explore the side streets of the old town for a picture of yesteryear, discover the small museums which feature the Confederate, and Revolutionary war era history of the town. Walk up the brick steps to St. Peter’s Church, the oldest practicing Anglican church in the New World and discover the famous people buried in the graveyard.
Walk a few miles to the northeast past the Unfinished Church, to the beaches, Tobacco Bay, Achilles Bay and Fort St. Catherine’s beach where you will find restaurants and concessions and snorkeling spots. And you can’t leave Bermuda without visiting at least one fort, so put that on your agenda too, as Bermuda famously has more forts and more churches per square mile than anywhere else on earth.
If you are tired from your St. George’s Adventures, you can always turn the ten minute walk into a two minute bus ride and hop on any bus travelling out of town, (pink pole rather than the blue poles which travel into St. George’s.)
Get off at the bus stop at the top of Speaker’s Drive and enjoy the walk down the oleander framed driveway returning to Red Barracks, your home away from home.
