The First Floor
Cooking is a passion, a way of life and an art form for the owners of Red Barracks, therefore the open plan kitchen is fully appointed and the room features a long dining table, originally an Ayurevdic massage table. A Chinese screen from the mid 19th century divides the room from the dining area on one side and the library and living room on the other. The library is housed between a pair of southern Indian temple columns from Kerala. The table in the living room is fashioned from a palace window in Rajasthan, Northern India. Amid the antiques from India and China, relax at the piano, borrow a book from the library or enjoy a film or your favorite television show on the widescreen TV. However with the over 300 days of sunshine Bermuda has every calendar year, we imagine you might spend more time on the wrap around verandah which can be accessed by a quadrant of doors on the first and ground floors. Outside there is a long dining table, and outdoor couches and chairs, BBQs, plenty of space for family and friends to dine and relax to the sound of Bermuda’s gentle breeze in the palm leaves looking out over the panoramic view of the turquoise St. George’s harbor.
The Ground Floor
Walking down the cedar staircase onto the ground floor, you will discover the office, and two bedrooms with private bathrooms. Entering the King bed master bedroom the doorways are framed by Indian doors from a typical mud brick Keralan house and featuring the Arab influence of the area. The owners collected most of the antiques and artwork found in the house, during their years living in India and China (Hong Kong). In the master bedroom’s ensuite bathroom there is also a steam bath, which can be used in addition to a normal shower. The guest bedroom consists of two twin beds, which can be used separately or pushed together to form another King bed. In the back of the house is the utilities room with laundry machines, storage and the main utility box. Access the dock and lawn from any of the doors on the ground floor, follow the house around to the eastern side and climb up an exterior staircase to the front of the house. Don’t miss the beautiful florals, and native roses blooming in every corner.
